PNG should use domestic gas: Sonk

PAPUA New Guinea should utilise its domestic gas as an interim fuel to produce electricity, Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd (KPHL) managing director Wapu Sonk says.
Sonk said this during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry and Department for International Trade and Investment in Port Moresby on Thursday where the state company would support the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) concept with energy solutions.
“LNG (liquefied natural gas) from PNG is utilised as a feedstock by industries and power generating companies in a number of Asian countries, there is no reason why this cannot also be done at an appropriate scale around the country,” he said.
“KPHL understands that until PNG’s renewable resources can be fully harnessed for power generation, the country should utilise its domestic gas as a green alternative to liquid fuels.
“Although a major focus for KPHL is on promoting greater utilisation of gas available under the domestic market obligations agreed to by the operators of the country’s LNG.”
