PAPUA New Guinea will continue to trade with the United Kingdom as freely as it does now without any additional barriers or tariffs, says Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Rimbink Pato.
The UK signed an agreement with Pacific Islands states on Thursday in London.
The trade continuity agreement that was signed would see British businesses and consumers benefitting from continued trading arrangements with Papua New Guinea after the UK leaves the European Union.
“It’s reflective of the importance the UK and PNG place on the agreement,” Pato said.
Pato said the agreement eliminated tariff on all goods from Papua New Guinea into the UK and would gradually remove around 80 per cent tariffs on British exports to PNG.
He said PNG was a major exporter of oil palm and tuna to the UK.
High Commissioner Winnie Kiap signed the agreement with the UK International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox. The UK is currently negotiating an exit strategy with the European Union.
