PRIME Minister James Marape has assured his continuous support to newly-elected Solomon Islands (SI) Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele to strengthen relations.
Manele was elected yesterday following a secret ballot vote of 31-18 in Honiara’s Parliament.
In a congratulatory letter, Prime Minister Marape conveyed sincere congratulations of both his government and the people of Papua New Guinea, offering his support and guidance to the new leadership.
“Your appointment as Prime Minister is testament to the vibrant democratic values, principles and peaceful process that the Solomon Islands uphold dearly,” Marape remarked.
“As close and near neighbours, it goes without saying that the Melanesian spirit of ‘looking out’ for one another will remain our word and our bond, as always.
Thus, Prime Minister, you have the assurances of my government and people that we will continue to assist and work with your government and people as you lead your country into the next five years,” Marape said.
Marape also acknowledged the significant contributions of Manele’s predecessor, Manasseh Sogavareh, whom he referred to as a “good brother”. “His strong and enviable leadership as Prime Minister of your beautiful country throughout the past five years has been one of great admiration,” Marape said.
Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, who was in Honiara to witness the election yesterday, said he looked forward to working with Manele to strengthen relations.
“Manele is a friend to our country having graduated from the University of Papua New Guinea with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Politics and Public Administration in 1991,” Rosso said.
Manele was re-elected to the national parliament as the Member for the Hograno-Kia-Havulei Constituency and a member of the Coalition for National Unity and Transformation.
The Coalition for National Unity and Transformation (CNUT) consists of Our Party, the People’s First Party and Kadere Party.
He said as a former Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Manele’s career path showcases a blend of diplomatic experience, administrative expertise, and political leadership within SI government structures.
