PNGFS to shutdown venues

THE Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation (PNGSF) will be shutting down all of its venues from today, in compliance with the national isolation strategy to contain the surge in Covid-19 cases.
This comes after the National Pandemic Response Controller David Manning issued new measures on Friday.
In a statement, PNGSF’s pandemic management committee said the measures meant that all sporting competitions were suspended until further notice.
The measures provide for a ban on:

  • GATHERINGS of more than 10 people; and,
  • CLUB, recreational or professional sporting matches except for recreational sporting games of no more than four persons.

A person or organisation may apply in writing to the controller or the relevant provincial administrator for an exemption for a gathering of more than 10 persons.
A request for an exemption must include the steps taken to ensure compliance with “Niupela Pasin” (new normal) and to reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19.
“The reopening of the sporting venues after two weeks will depend on further consultations with the controller’s office,” PNGSF said.
Sporting bodies that have suspended their competitions in light of the measures include the PNG Football Association, Port Moresby Soccer Association, Port Moresby men’s and women’s softball and the Port Moresby Basketball Association, among others.
The sporting fraternity and supporters are advised to adhere to the measures.
