THE Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) held a sponsors reception in Port Moresby last Thursday to update the organisation’s backers on its new strategy.
PNGOC president Sir John Dawanincura thanked the partners, which include The National, for their continued commitment and support despite the challenging times due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
PNGOC secretary-general Auvita Rapilla highlighted their new strategic direction from this year to 2024.
“You are important stakeholders that provide significant support to achieve our goals and objectives,” she told the sponsors.
“You all play an important part in nation building and uniting our country.
“For this, we truly value your partnership.”
Team PNG chef de mission Tamzin Wardley provided an update on athlete preparations for the July 23-Aug 8 Tokyo Games.
She also paid tribute to the sponsors, friends, families and agencies for ensuring that Team PNG were better prepared and supported to realise their Olympic dreams.
“We couldn’t have done it without all of you and we are very appreciative of your support,” Wardley said.
PNGOC fundraising committee chairman Michael Henao said while it was difficult to secure sponsorship, the ongoing support was a source of renewed strength in the organisation’s capacity as an agent of change.
“Next year, it will be an enormous task for us to raise enough funds to send Team PNG to the (Commonwealth and Pacific Mini) Games,” he said.
