THE PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chairmanship has to be safeguarded by regulations to only allow qualified candidates to vie for the role, says an official.
PNGRFL Highlands Confederate director Joe Tokam told The National on Friday that the sport’s national governing body had to put in place by-laws to filter candidates for the top job as rugby league was a national sport.
“An individual who wants to be the PNGRFL chairman must be articulate and intelligent so he can discuss and negotiate important business deals locally and overseas,” he said.
“Most people see it as the national sport.
“Rugby league is a complex industry.”
Affiliated league presidents discussed a draft constitution at the recent PNGRFL annual general meeting outside Port Moresby.
“I believe we can add by-laws to safeguard the chairmanship in future PNGRFL elections,” Tokam said.
“It will be good to screen candidates.
“The person who is elected as chairman must be prudent and competent to manage the affairs of PNGRFL.”
Meanwhile, Tokam said he was confident in re-elected chairman Sandis Tsaka and the new Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League board.
He said there was still more to be done at the administrative level.
“Tsaka’s reappointment is an indication of good Leadership with prudent governance,” he said.
“With the new board, we’re definitely going to assess our progress from previous terms and try to do more moving forward.”
