PNGSF hails corporate sector

DESPITE an entire year with limited sporting activities and programmes, the Papua New Guinea Sport Foundation (PNGSF) has commended the corporate sector for recognising the efforts of athletes.
PNGSF acting executive director Micah James said the efforts of business houses to bring back the SP Sports Awards in 2021 showed the continued partnership between the Government and corporate sector.
“What I can do is pass on the Government’s appreciation for the work the corporate sector does for sports in Papua New Guinea,” he said.
“Sports are the vehicle that can drive a lot of positive initiatives and the annual SP Sports Awards which recognises athletes and their sacrifices.
“It is proper that we show them our gratitude and appreciation for this.
“The SP Sports Awards is a commendable and successful event, and to do it for 28 consecutive years is an amazing effort by SP Brewery.”
James said the opening of nominations also gave an opportunity to recognise the sporting achievements of 2019 and 2020.
“We know that the pandemic has affected normalcy across the world, however, it is obvious that we can’t continue to support this programme for our sports calendar again after it was postponed last year,” he said.
“I’m glad the organising committee have decided to find a way to stage this event in 2021, so the virtual awards will actually make sense.
James said most of the outstanding athletes were from the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, which PNG performed admirably and these athletes can now be recognised.
