Papua New Guinea international Ishmael Pole suffered a fractured finger in the second leg of the Fiji’s National Playoff after Lautoka went down, 0-4 to Rewa football club.
Pole, who was contracted by Lautoka on loan for the two-leg challenge of the Oceania Football Confederation (O-League) tournament, was unable to play in second half as Lautoka were sunk by Rewa on Sunday at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
A disappointed Pole told this paper via Whatsapp that the results were not pleasing but was satisfied with his performance, having featured for the first time on the international stage.
“I did my personal best like I always do with every club that I sign up for,” Pole told The National.
“Saved two goals in first half.
“But it was just unlucky for us (Lautoka) on Sunday.”
Pole sustained a finger injury when he attempted to save a goal. The keeper said this affected his game in the first half which saw Rewa lead 2-nil at half time. He said the injury forced him to be benched for the rest of second half.
“One of our defenders slid on my finger after I attempted to stop a shot from Rewa,” the goalkeeper said.
“I couldn’t handle the second goal as my finger was hurt and tumbled the ball which Rewa scored.
“It was bleeding so I couldn’t play in the second half.”
Despite missing out on the O-league championships, Pole said it was a needed experience and exposure for him as a goalkeeper.
“Apart from midfielders and strikers, I think this is the first time a PNG goalkeeper has come out to play for a club in Fiji,” Pole said.
“It’s a good experience for me showcasing my talent on such international occasions.”
Pole and fellow countryman Raymond Gunemba were amongst the latest inclusion for the Fiji’s reigning Digicel premier league champions, Lautoka FC. Pole said negotiations were underway to extend his contract with Lautoka.
He said this would be made official once agreements were made between his local club Gulf Komara and Lautoka.
“I will meet with Lautoka FC boss to discuss my contract,” Pole said.
“But I’ll return to Port Moresby on the 28th of this month to rejoin Komara since I’m contracted with them.
“From there I’ll have to ensure agreements between the two clubs are official.
“So things are sorted out in a proper way”.
