Police on alert after gang attacks

Police and businesses in Milne Bay are on high-alert for possible armed robberies by a dangerous gang which has been terrorising the province since 2014.
Acting police commander Inspector George Bayagau said yesterday that the gang comprised mostly of prison escapees who have allegedly killed two police officers and stolen almost K1million in goods and cash from businesshouses in a string of armed robberies.
“This same gang had allegedly killed a security guard and a female when robbing the Tawala Tourist Resort and Alotau Enterprise last week,” he said.
“The communities and businesshouses from Hagita to Alotau town and to East Cape are on high-alert.
“Other businesshouses on Samarai and Misima islands are requesting for more police presence.
“But since we have limited manpower, logistics and resources, we will maintain our presence in Alotau area.”
Bayagau said that so far people were providing reliable information about the gang’s movements.
“We have questioned some people and generally have an idea of the gang’s activities and plans,” he said.
“And people are now coming to us with information to help us track and apprehend the gang.
“This gang has been causing trouble for a long time now and everyone is fed up with them.”
