POLICE in East Sepik have charged two men with the murder of a bus driver along the Yangoru-Maprik Highway on Mar 29.
Provincial police commander Robert Gesa said Jerome Narimole and Alipas Ronguma, both from Yangoru, were arrested on Tuesday.
He said nine suspects were initially apprehended but all escaped.
The two men were arrested by the mobile squad and Port Moresby detectives.
They are now in police custody at Yangoru, charged with wilful murder and armed robbery.
The killing happened at 5am on March 29 when the driver was taking passengers from Maprik to Wewak.
“The driver drove to a section of the road at Wamayang where there was a tree branch put across the road to stop drivers,” Maprik
police commander Linus Damien told The National.
“When he tried to stop and reverse, eight men armed with guns ran out of the bush and shot him.”
The driver was rushed to hospital but died on the way.
Meanwhile, West Sepik police have uprooted more than 100 marijuana plants in a remote village.
Provincial police commander Moses Ibsagi said police raided Wara Kalap village and uprooted the plants after a tip-off.
“The suspects escaped but police managed to recover a shot gun at one of the suspects’ house at Sausi village,” he said.
Ibsagi said investigations were continuing.
