MANUS police have arrested a suspect who robbed a man with accomplices armed with a homemade gun on Thursday, commander Chief Insp David Yapu says.
“The man was robbed of two handphones and an assortment of cigarettes at about 8.30pm in upper ward five’s Katen Tingou in Lorengau town,” he said.
Chief Insp Yapu said the same suspect was allegedly involved in the attempted hold up in the same afternoon between Jurumo Trading and ward five market.
He said the suspect, with his accomplices, mostly youths, tried to steal a bag of money from a Chinese man who put up a struggle and, with the help of locals in the area, sent the robbers fleeing.
Chief Insp Yapu said the suspect’s accomplices had been identified and were on the run.
He appealed to the public to help bring in the suspects and surrender to the police.
“Most of the petty crimes are committed by youths,” he said.
“The Government and non-government organisations should look into to addressing youth issues and engage them in lawful activities to help keep them away from petty crime.
“The way forward for them is youth empowerment through small medium enterprises with Government funding.”
