POLICE have arrested a Grade 7 schoolboy for robbing PMV passengers in Madang’s Balasigo on Monday.
Madang commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said police were alerted of the robbery and responded by blocking off their escape route.
“The schoolboy was arrested but the others managed to escape,” he said.
Supt Rubiang said robberies in Madang were now mostly committed by teenagers and youths aged 14 and above.
“It is frightening to see such an unhealthy trend in society,” he said.
“They should be with their parents at home.
“We are investigating the robbery and will get the schoolboy to identify the other two robbers.”
Supt Rubiang said burglary was the most common crime committed by schoolboys and youths.
“Parents are urged to discipline their children before it is too late to correct them,” said.
Supt Rubiang said police were trying their best to ensure that the province was safe but communities and parents also needed to play their part to help reduce crime.
