POLICE Border division commander Assist Comm John Kolopen is aware of the deteriorated condition of the Daru police barracks in Western.
“Yes, I’m aware that the Gamea Barracks has been facing serious health issues for 20 years now,” he said.
“But I’m not aware that the Western Provincial Health Authority has issued condemnation notice. I plan to visit the province next week.”
Kolopen said after receiving reports that the health authority was preparing orders to condemn the barracks: “I will seek funds from the police management, Western provincial government and the South Fly distrtc development authority to try to make improvements to the houses. After all, these officers police the international border between PNG, Australia and Indonesia.”
Daru Mayor Samuel Wingu said earlier that the barracks faced water and sewage problems and police officers’ families had wells at the back of their houses.
They used the water from the well to flush their toilets and to wash. Their houses are also falling apart.
