Police clarify special ops wing of NCD

THE special operations wing of the National Capital District does not include PNG Defence Force and Correctional Services personnel, says deputy police commissioner Donald Yamasombi.
He said the command of the operation in the city comprised of the Special Services Division, K9, Water Police, Police Band and the Crimes Unit.
“There is no personnel from the PNGDF and Correctional Services,” Yamasombi said.
“We only have police personnel at the moment under the special operations wing.
“The units involved will give their support to police in NCD targeting known hotspots.”
He told The National that police personnel would be deployed in the city’s three districts.
Last month, Yamasombi said in statement that the special operations wing would target crime hotspots within the marked zones.
He said suspects apprehended during the operation would be profiled.
“This means we will get their fingerprints, photographs and full details of who they are, where they live and where they come from,” he said,
“Through this, we can keep tabs on people that have committed crimes in the city, which in most cases are the same people who re-offend.”
Yamasombi was assigned by police commissioner David Manning to command the operation.
“We have three zones in the city with one directorate assigned to each and they will be rotated on a weekly basis,” he said.
“The rotation will help us see what difference we can make in terms of capability so resources we have can be placed in those zones.”
