TWO police houses were burnt after a man was shot dead at Nipa, in Southern Highlands, on Sunday.
Acting provincial police commander Gideon Kauke said the incident happened after a police officer allegedly shot dead a local man when trying to discharge a warning shot to disperse a group of drunken men.
“A taskforce has been assigned to investigate the incident and see if the officer is at fault,” he said.
Kauke said the officer was responding to a group of drunken youths. He was trying to fire a warning shot to disperse them but he did not see the victim standing in the distance.
“The relatives of the dead man than retaliated and burnt the houses,” Kauke said.
“The officer fled after the incident happened.
“The Task Force team is still looking to have him investigated,” he said.
Kuke said the police officer would be charged like any ordinary citizen if there was sufficient evidence against him.
