RAMU police are being stationed at the Yuria wet crossing along the Ramu-Madang Highway to ensure the safety of the travelling public.
The action was taken after locals blocked off a section of the road and were collecting money but were dispersed by the police yesterday morning.
Ramu police commander Insp Edward Alphonse said the river was still at a flood level and small vehicles could not cross.
He urged the travelling public to take precautions when crossing.
“It’s too dangerous because it can carry away small vehicles because the current is strong and water level is high,” Insp Alphonse said.
“I want the locals to look after the passengers of the vehicles who were on both sides of the river waiting for the flood to ease to complete their journey.”
Insp Alphonse said the river usually flooded during the wet season and hindered public transport.
