Police monitor protest by Hidden Valley mine workers over pay issues

POLICE are monitoring a protest staged by workers of the Hidden Valley mine in Bulolo which started a week ago over pay issues, says provincial police commander Supt Jacob Singura.
He said the workers wanted the Hidden Valley mine management (Harmony Gold) to increase their pay and resolve other issues they had raised.
“I talked to the management and stationed a police unit at the mine site to ensure parties involved come to a solution that is acceptable,” he said. “We do not know what might be their next course of action if what they were asking the company is not met. That is why I stationed policemen there to ensure that proper procedures are followed.”
Policemen will remain at the mine site this weekend.
Supt Singura said some of the workers had gone back to work.
“We are there to secure the properties and ensure that there is no harm to anyone from both parties,” he said. “Police will remain neutral.”
Supt Singura said policemen would be professional in their conduct so that the people could see that everyone was being treated fairly.
