Police need communication centre to fight crime in Lae

LAE police need support to build a modern communication centre to reduce crime, metropolitan commander Anthony Wagambie Jr says.
The police communications centre operations room will enhance policing efforts when radio network and CCTV are installed at strategic locations in the city.
Additional radio and CCTV network will effectively boost the existing police emergency toll free number and the response units.
The communication centre would not only cater for Lae and Morobe but reach Madang and Eastern Highlands as police do at times when people call from those areas for assistance.
Wagambie said Digicel PNG was instrumental in setting up the current “call centre”.
“We have calls congesting during peak hours,” he said.
“I want calls to be answered all the time without going to “call waiting” when the police operator is attending to other callers.
“Our Facebook page is also monitored 24/7 by assigned operators.”
Wagambie said police required a 40-foot mining dongal or office-type container set up in front of the Top Town office complex.
“A spacious facility can cater for more staff and equipment for an operations room to set a benchmark for policing in Papua New Guinea by enabling professional and effective calls and responses,” he said.
“We cannot stop crime entirely but try our best to minimise and manage it. I thank the Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry for its continuous support.”
He said effective communication could help police respond to crimes scenes faster and also help lower the rate of crime in Lae city and Morobe.
