POLICE Commissioner David Manning and Life Insurance Corporation (PNG) Ltd chief executive officer Ure Rauka have agreed on the continuation of insurance cover for 7,500 police officers.
The continuation however now covers the officers’ families as well, Manning said.
“This cover includes funeral expenses, medical cover and now Covid 19,” he said.
“For all members who are deployed and retrenched, this insurance cover is comprehensive for spouses as well.
“In our efforts to be a responsible employer of 7,500 men and women, it is equally important that we ensure we take stock of their performance and we ensure we continue to make their working conditions a bit more conducive to what we demand from them.
“We are in a high-risk profession.
“We continue to lose every year members to lifestyle diseases, deaths caused by criminal actions against our members.
“For us in the hierarchy in partnership with our union, we ensure we provide the very best in terms of insurance not only to members but to their families as well.
“It is an expensive activity but a necessary one.
“In order for us to continue to demand the performance and output of our people, we need to give them a peace of mind that whatever happens to them we, have them and their families covered.”
Rauka said: “We have been in this partnership since 2016 and we are honouring claims when they are in order. In 2019, we received K2.8mil in death claims.
“We paid K2.17mil and paid funeral expenses of K1.3mil.
“In 2020 till June 30, we received K1.56 mil and have paid K630,000.
“On top of that we, have paid K450,000 in funeral expenses.
“Mind you, this does not include medical insurance.
“Because of this scheme for five years, they have come to understand us better.
“Our relationship has developed and we have improved the covers.
“We have now lifted the life insurance claim to K65,000
“Medical insurance is now at K100,000.”
