All police officers and their immediate family members should register for a National Identity (NID) Card, said Police Commissioner Gari Baki.
He said police has signed an agreement with the PNG Civil and Identity Registry Office for police to assist in the NID project, and he was expecting everyone to comply.
“The registration of our citizens is a very important initiative to manage our citizen’s identity to avoid such crimes as identity fraud and minimise others. The department is now fully supporting this important government project,” Baki said.
He said an official instruction would be issued to all divisional and provincial commanders to ensure all police officers and their immediate family members were registered.
“This is important to clean our payroll and at the same time be able to have a proper database for our police personnel and their family members to manage in terms of accommodation and other benefits,” Baki said.
He said that at present it was difficult to manage police barracks in the country because there were uncles, aunties, bubus and other extended family members living together at the house allocated to a police officer.
“So we are paying extra for the power and water bills,” he said.
