Police out on roads in safety blitz

Traffic police are conducting road checks at various parts of Port Moresby to identify unroadworthy vehicles as well as conduct awareness on road safety.
According to NCD police traffic director Joe Joseph, this was normal traffic operation. The awareness is important for the Apec Leaders’ Summit in November, he said.
“We are checking vehicles with serious road safety defects that will cause road safety issues, defective vehicles trigger road accidents and loss of innocent lives,” Joseph said.
He said the new road law was “coming into effect, police are carrying out the Road Traffic Authority Act enforcement”.
“We are also working closely with the city authority to locate a venue to stock impounded vehicles. Once the venue is secured, all defective vehicles will be locked up. It will depend on whether we issue a ticket or ask the owner to bring their vehicles to service because it’s no longer roadworthy.”
Joseph said people living along the Hubert Murray Highway, especially 8, 9 and 10-Mile area, will face traffic problems during peak hours because of roadworks.
