POLICE in Central are investigating the death of a man which has resulted in the destruction of gardens and a home, police said.
Provincial commander Sibron Papoto told The National that the reason for the death of Henry Aluofo, 57, from Aipiena village in the Kairuku district, was still unknown.
“Aluofo was allegedly attacked by a group of men who assaulted him very badly and he sustained injuries to his face and parts of the body,” Papoto said.
He said the attackers were allegedly from Veifa, also in Kairuku, and the incident happened on Aug 6 between 7pm and 9pm.
“He was rescued by an elderly woman who took him to her house but the attackers dragged him out and assaulted him again.
“It was reported that he escaped to a neighbouring village where he took refuge with relatives and received treatment. But the injuries were so serious that he died.
“His body was transported to his village where his relatives mobilised and attacked Veifa villagers.”
Papoto said that in the process, a house was burnt down and gardens were destroyed.
“Situation got tense at that time but Central police intervened and negotiated with the village elders and they diffused the situation at Vei’fa village.
“A roadblock was also conducted by the relatives of the deceased.”
Papoto said that the main suspect was locked up but investigations would continue.
