Provincial police commander Supt Peter Barkie said at a parade at Alotau Police Station yesterday that the operation would end on Jan 2.
Officers were briefed on their responsibilities and tasks during the operation.
Supt Barkie said Milne Bay’s reputation had been tarnished by reports of crime such as robberies and sea piracy over the last two years, but, the situation had settled down.
He said the police force aimed to win back the people’s trust and confidence through their efforts during the Christmas period and through the New Year.
“We have the logistics, rations and other equipment and supplies for the operation and we look forward to a successful operation in the coming weeks,” he said.
Supt Barkie said the province’s police still needed the support and cooperation from the people to ensure a safe and peaceful Christmas and New Year period.
“We all must work together to help fight crime in the province and make these festive season a successful and peaceful one.”
He said the police would carry out their normal policing duties, and wanted people to behave and not disturb the peace.
