Police postpone Amaiu questioning, awaits legal advice

THE National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate’s questioning of former Moresby North East Member of Parliament Labi Amaiu over alleged misappropriation of K4 million in public funds has been postponed.
The directorate is seeking legal advice for the interpretation of a letter presented by Amaiu on Friday.
Directorate director Matthew Damaru said Amaiu was supposed to have been questioned but he handed over a letter from his lawyers to stop the questioning.
“Our in-house lawyer was not in last Friday, so we have postponed the questioning until our lawyers interpret the legality of the letter.
“But we believe that despite the letter, we will still be able to question him on the Moresby North East District services improvement programme funds.
“When we have cleared the legal matters with our lawyers, then we will bring him in for questioning,” he said.
Amaiu was taken in for questioning by the directorate last Wednesday.
He was picked up at the Waigani court and his supporters followed him to the directorate where they allegedly caused a commotion outside the office.
Amaiu was later released and asked to return on Friday for questioning.
