A MOTHER of two was released on K500 bail after she was charged with stealing a cheque from her employer on June 17.
Lae District Court magistrate Pious Tapil told the 31-year-old mother that she was lucky to be released on bail because of her two children aged one and three.
Anna Pola, from a mix parentage of Manus and Chimbu, allegedly stole the cheque written out for K52,350.40 belonging to Papindo Group of Companies.
Pola, then a payroll clerk of Papindo head office in Lae, was responsible for safekeeping cheques and destroying dishonoured cheques.
The cheque she stole was dishonoured by Papindo and Pola was supposed to have destroyed it.
Instead, she allegedly took the cheque and handed it over to another person who then banked it.
The bank then called Papindo to verify the cheque and its amount.
Upon confirmation from Papindo that the cheque had been dishonoured, the bank stopped payment and transaction.
Papindo then lodged a police report and Pola was arrested and charged.
Pola was in custody until bail was raised.
Her case was fixed for mention on Sept 30.
