LAE police are investigating a double murder and wounding of two other people at 5-Mile, outside Lae, after a drinking spree last Saturday.
Police said the incident happened when people from Enga, living at the Tais settlement, 6-Mile, confronted a man, from Chimbu, at 5-Mile, with weapons and allegedly slashed him with a bush knife across his face.
“The person is now receiving medical attention at Angau Hospital but is in a stable condition,” Lae Met Supt Chief Supt Chris Kunyanban said.
He said during the confrontation, a 12-year-old boy was killed along with another man who was slashed with a bush knife on the wrist, across the face and head, legs and at his back resulting in his death.
Chief Supt Kunyanban said the other victim was a man who had his left wrist slashed.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police said the motive for the attacks were not known but was alleged to be in relation to a drunken brawl the previous night.
“The killings and causing of grievous bodily harm are uncalled for and I am warning those people that there is law and it will deal with those who go against it,” Chief Supt Kunyanban said.
He said the manner in which the people were chopped with bush knives was senseless.
“I condemn their actions as it is barbaric in nature which today’s society cannot accept.”
Chief Supt Kunyanban said police would do their best to investigate the incidents and arrest those responsible.
“The child who was killed was innocent and for those people to take away his life at this stage is very bad,” he said. “I have instructed police to get to the bottom of this with their investigations and those involved should face the full brunt of the law.”
