POLICE in Wewak are investigating a robbery involving more than K20,000.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said a group of five men allegedly broke into the PNG Air office at Boram Airport in the early hours of Saturday.
They allegedly took the cash plus other items.
Beli said the men allegedly armed with a gun and a pinch bar chased away the guard at the office and broke the locks.
Police suspect it was an inside-job.
Beli said security officers on duty at the airport and some recently sacked employees of PNG Air would be brought in for questioning.
“The manner in which the robbery was carried out causes suspicion because they knew exactly where the safe was,” he said.
Beli said security firms must have the capacity to protect lives and properties.
He advised security firms to have enough manpower, radio, cars and a good monitoring system so that would help them stop crimes.
“If they have to get a gun, get it. Doing business here is risky,” Beli said.
“The robbery is a clear example of the inadequacy of some security firms to provide security.
“In this case, the firm had only one guard at the location which was unsafe.”
