THE increase in settlements in Wewak and its surroundings is becoming a concern for police.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said while police were responding to criminal activities, they were also dealing with many fights happening within the town area because of minor disagreements between the different ethnic groups.
“This is stretching our resources,” he said.
“We cannot continue to solve issues that can be solved by mediators.”
Supt Beli called on provincial authorities and law and order stakeholders to address the continuous land grabbing in Wewak.
He made the call after instances of police facing criminal activities in many settlements were popping up.
“This is a general concern of the land grabbing we are facing in the township of Wewak, we have the highway, islands and people living around the Sepik River making their way to Wewak and homes are popping up everywhere,” he said.
