Police rearrest suspect

MADANG police have rearrested a suspect who was allegedly involved in stealing and stripping a vehicle belonging to the PNG Institute of Medical Research (IMR) at New Town on Sept 18.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the suspect was arrested and detained but escaped on Sept 24 from Jomba Police Station.
He said the man was alleged to have been involved in other serious crimes in the province and had been in hiding when he was caught on Wednesday in Madang town.
Supt Rubiang said the man was charged with two counts of armed robbery and escaping from custody.
He confirmed that the suspect had been refused bail as he waited for police to complete his file.
Supt Rubiang said the man was suspected in a string of other crimes, including robbery, wounding, assault and public drunkenness and causing trouble in the community.
He commended his men for capturing the suspect who would finally face court to answer for his crimes.
According to the police report, the one-month-old IMR Toyota Land Cruiser was on its way to pick up an employee when the driver was held up and the vehicle stolen.
The police were alerted and searched for it before finally finding it stripped by the thieves at a location along the Beon road outside Madang town.
