A police reservist in Jiwaka has been taken in by police for questioning after the death of a third-year student of Tuman Nazarene Teachers college last week.
Jiwaka police commander Chief Inspector Horima Piamia said the reason behind the killing was still unknown.
The suspect is now in police custody.
Piamia said a total of nine killings were reported in the province this year and police were fortunate to arrest most of the suspects involved.
“People are cooperating with police now and are reporting incidents happening around them,” he said.
“It will be a way forward this year.”
Last year, there were 44 killings among tribes which were reported with 24 arrests made.
“As the responsible authority, we are trying our best to investigate all the cases that are brought to our attention,” Piamia said.
He said they were investigating and making arrests of those responsible to face justice.
“And at the same time, we are doing our best in terms of proactive policing to prevent such deaths from occurring.”
Piamia said with the limited resources, police were expecting communities to continue to report incidents and take part in maintaining order in their respective communities.
