POLICE shot and wounded a man while seven others are on the run after robbing a family of more than K60,000 and phones at Madang’s Masingun last Saturday.
Madang police commander acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang said the man is alleged to be the driver of the getaway vehicle used in aiding the criminals to escape.
He said the wounded driver was taken to Modilon General Hospital’s emergency unit where he is currently nursing his gunshot wounds.
He is expected to be charged with armed robbery once discharged from the hospital.
Rubiang said last Saturday at around 10pm, the armed criminals used a sledge harmer to enter the home and rob the Chinese family.
The group then fled by boat towards Bilbil Island.
Rubiang said police gave chase where a 20-minute shoot-out occurred at the junction of Erima.
He said the driver of the getaway vehicle was shot and wounded while his other gang members fled.
The police response team recovered the vehicle together with 3x 9mm live ammuntions, several empty 9mm shells, suspects clothes and the sledge hammer used in the armed robbery at Masingun.
He said the identity of the other suspects were known and the police would arrest them at any time.
