Saidor High School in Madang’s Rai Coast district will be closed for three weeks due to the burning down of the school’s mess on Tuesday morning, says principal Ruben Numunepe.
Numunepe said the acting provincial education director John Ura had advised him to close the school to allow police to investigate the fire incident.
He said that the other reason was that the situation at the school was still tense.
He also said the closure would give time to the parents to build a new mess facility for boarding students.
Numunepe said the boarding students were those whose villages were far from the school.
“I want the people living near the school to know that the school properties are government assets,” he said.
“The teachers and staff of the school are employees of the government.
“They are here to serve the people of Saidor and Rai Coast.”
The fire happened at 2am on Tuesday while teachers were asleep.
Numunepe said there were some suspects that might be involved.
He said 20 male students were suspended for drinking inside the school last Monday.
He said the suspended students had sent threats to the school board.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said that the school had faced a lot of problems and he urged the management to identify those that were suspended for drinking last week who could be the alleged suspects who burned down the mess.
