Police to investigate highway complaints

POLICE are investigating claims that some officers have been collecting money from public vehicle drivers and passengers.
Chief Inspector Charles Winuan, in charge of the police internal affairs directorate, said they had collected statements from some men from Gulf who had complained about the officers.
The statements and evidence are being analysed before the officers are called for questioning.
Winuan called on policemen who may be involved in such activities to stop.
The complaint was about officers collecting money from drivers and passengers without any receipts or traffic infringement notices along the Hiritano Highway.
Gulf PMV Owners Operation Association chairman Paul Paiva said drivers and passengers were threatened and assaulted by police officers for carrying extra cargo or not properly loading the truck.
Police manning roadblocks at Laloki, Daiyama, Bereina, Doa and Malalaoa demanded payments from drivers.
