POLICE officers are under pressure to be disciplined in performing their duties and be exemplary in obeying the law as they prepare for a busy festive season.
As the police force prepares to maintain public safety and security during the Christmas and New Year holidays, Madang acting police commander Supt Leo Lamei said too many police officers were failing in their duties and ending up breaking the law themselves.
He told a police parade that some officers had ended up in jail, some were awaiting their court cases while others were subject of investigations for taking the law into their own hands.
“Discipline is lacking and many of you are your own bosses. You think you can do anything but we are subject to the law,” he said.
Police stations around the country have launched special operations to combat crime and maintain peace
during the holiday period.
Some provinces such as Western Highlands have even banned the sale of liquor during the festive season
Acting Police Commissioner Simon Kauba said in a statement yesterday that police officers needed to continue to protect and serve
the people without fear or favour, malice or ill-will.
He said the best Christmas present officers could give the people was the opportunity for them to celebrate Christmas and New Year in a peaceful and secure environment.
