TRAINERS and new officers who graduated from the Bomana Police College outside Port Moresby underwent an awareness training on domestic abuse yesterday as part of their capacity building in the force.
Training commandant Chief Supt Perou N’dranou told The National that training on the issue was important for policemen and women to be prepared to deal with domestic issues when they go out in the field.
“The public is not satisfied with  the way police deal with domestic issues professionally,” he said.
“We have to improve in that and officers to learn the necessary skills needed in dealing with such issues.”
N’dranou said this was their responsibility as a training organisation to provide training that would build the human resource capability to deal with domestic violence.
PNG Counselling and Consultation Services director and senior counsellor Allan Tagai said the constabulary wanted recruits and officers to be trained on the topic because it was not taught at the college.
