POLICE have proposed a K1.3 billion 10-year budget for the force to rebuild its administrative operations, Police Minister William Onglo says.
“The proposed budget is justifiable because of the serious growth in crime rate nationwide that is causing concerns to the ministry and the force,” he said.
“We are aware of the seriousness in crime rates and we are working on it.
“We have a lot of legacy issues, but let’s not point fingers here and blame the past.
“Law and order issues are for everyone to help the force.”
Onglo said the law and order problems would not be fixed overnight.
“The budget is planned for the force to cover community policy, reservists and get the provincial government system in line with the police,” he said.
“We will work through this plan and we need the cooperation of everyone nationwide.
“The police cannot do it alone.
“Policemen and women cannot solve all your problems.
“Most of the time, the problems are caused by the public who then stand back and point fingers at the police.
“We all have common sense and let us be responsible.
“To serve, there has to be logistical, manpower and other resources to assist the police.
“As part of the corporate plan, we are working on rebuilding policing administratively.
“We are constantly talking to the department of finance and treasury.
“Despite the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic issues, we are getting through, on top of the financial constraints. We have the election coming up. We are asking for money for the election, rebuilding the police force.”
