Police will explain poor conduct, says magistrate

NOT a single fugitive has been recaptured after 34 remandees and a convicted prisoner broke out of the Tari Police Station on Aug 30.
Hela’s magistrate Edward Komia told The National that the one-month time frame to recapture the 35 would lapse next week Thursday and the Hela police commander (PPC) and Tari Police Station commander (PSC) would be summoned to court.
“They will be required to attend court next week to explain why they failed to recapture the fugitives and why nothing has been done about it,” he said.
“Both police commanders have turned a blind eye on the matter.
“The PPC cannot blame the PSC and think he can run away from the problem.
“This is where the buck for the command in the province stops.
“There has been no explanation given to court so far on why the police station was unguarded and why there were no constables guarding the cell and manning the station to attend to police matters.
“There are other concerns that the police station is being used as an ATM machine.
“People seem to be arrested but released after arresting officers and policemen are being paid money.”
