A POLICEMAN was arrested and charged on Thursday for allegedly aiding a prisoner to escape from the Badili Police Station in Port Moresby last week.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Gideon Ikumu said First Constable Dick Wemin allegedly freed a suspect involved in the attack of the Fone Haus shop in downtown Port Moresby last weekend.
He said Wemin was detained at the Boroko watch house.
Fone Haus was broken into recently by eight suspects who were captured by the store’s closed-circuit television (CCTV).
Ikumu said two suspects were arrested and charged for damaging property and stealing.
“The suspect who was charged for stealing was freed by Wemin for unknown reasons,” he said.
Ikumu said more than K22,000 worth of items were stolen and these were phones, laptops and other electronic items.
“We are yet to get the number of items that were stolen but all of it added up to more than K22,000,” he said.
Ikumu said officers from the crime and investigations division were working on arresting six more suspects using the CCTV footage.
