A POLICEMAN attached to water police has been arrested and charged with the murder of bus driver Jesse Ambu at Manu Autoport on Feb 17.
National Capital District Metropolitan Supt Silva Sika said he was locked up at the Boroko Police Station waiting for his court appearance. “The officer was on duty at that time doing motorist patrols and received reports of a drunk and disorderly driver harassing the public at Manu,” he added.
Sika said at around 4pm they arrived at Manu bus stop.
“They parked the police vehicle near the bus stop where the deceased was behaving disorderly, the policeman got out the vehicle carrying with him his firearm,” Sika said.
“He (police officer) arrested the deceased and was bringing him to the vehicle when the deceased allegedly pulled out a knife and slashed the policeman’s right arm,” he said.
Sika said in self defence, the police officer kicked the deceased and shot him on the back with the gun.
“The deceased was rushed to the Port Moresby General Hospital by the police officer and his colleagues,” he saud,
He was pronounced dead the next day (Feb 18).”
Sika explained that the constabulary’s criminal investigations division, upon investigations, found that the killing was unlawful and had to formally arrest and charge the police officer.
The late Jesse’s brother, Tony Kua, said that the family was relieved that justice had taken its rightful course and must be seen by all.
“We will repatriate our late brother’s body to Mt Hagen,” he said.
