Political stability will ensure growth

Letters, Normal

I refer to the letter “PNG needs political stability to develop” (The National, July 22) by Mamando Pain.
The writer chronologically outlines some of the most important points and makes it so clear the reasons why the economic growth of PNG, prior to the introduction of OLIPPAC, has been so poor.
What the writer outlined is clear and I support him and many others who have been raising the same concern.
PNG needs political stability because it guarantees economic stability.
Political stability provides the environment that is conducive for economic growth and development of PNG.
And this is what we want, not power-hungry politicians causing political instability.
A foreign or local investor would not want to invest in a country where there is a lot of political infighting or unrest because the end result could be a loss as the government’s attention is diverted to stay in power.
History has shown why our economy was close to collapse when there was no OLIPPAC.
The opposition’s bid to oust the government must be based on concrete reasons.
What can the opposition do within these 18 months or so?
What are its plans or policies?
Can the opposition make changes overnight and deliver goods and services to us before 2012 election?
I doubt it.
What I am certain of is that both the government and the opposition will be preparing for 2012 election.
Thus, both sides have only one agenda – win political power.
Therefore, in the name of economic stability, I urge the opposition to let the government complete its full term and challenge it in 2012 election.
We will support the opposition if its intention to form government is genuine and it puts the people’s interest first.
