POMNA cancels competition

THE Port Moresby Netball Association (POMNA) has cancelled this year’s competition due to the Covid-19 restrictions imposed amid the nationwide state of emergency, according to an official.
POMNA senior vice-president Lynette Maha said the restrictions had prevented a possible start to a shortened season.
“The reasoning (for cancelling competition) obviously has to do with the global pandemic which has seriously affected every country, including PNG,” she said.
“We are of the view that when the SOE is lifted, the sporting venues which are currently used as isolation/quarantine centres for Covid-19, will still not be available.
“Also generating income for a short season is not viable and understandably, this year will be an inactive one as even international sports events have been suspended and all efforts have been to adhere to stringent measures and regulations put in placed.
“Executives will continue to meet to discuss strategies to improve POMNA next year.”
Maha encouraged teams to remain prepared whilst practising basic hygiene and social distancing.
POMNA’s annual general meeting will be announced after the SOE is lifted on June 2.
Meanwhile, Netball Papua New Guinea has cut this year’s affiliation fee from K1,000 to K500.
