PORT Moresby Rugby Union will kick their 2010 season off with its pre-season beginning Feb 27.
This was officially announced at the union’s first meeting of the year last Tuesday evening at Amet Lawyers’ office.
The start, initially planned for Feb 20-21, was delayed by a week, due to a time clash with a PNGRFU referees course, which will be run by visiting International Rugby Board referee’s trainer Roger Higgins.
In attendance, were representatives from all clubs except two (Southern Chiefs and Valley Hunters) taking part in the competition.
The POMRFU executive and competition organising committee were also present.
Medical Faculty based Medics, and Waigani Heights’ Valley Hunters, were the only clubs in the men’s competition absent, with women’s clubs, Southern Chiefs and LaSallains announcing their withdrawals from competition.
Reasons for the withdrawal of both women’s team were not made known, while Chiefs men have yet to confirm their standing.
With the start of the pre-season now set for Feb 27, and running for three weeks, this has now pushed the season proper to March 27, a week before the rescheduled regional competition the Coca-Cola Super 5 Challenge in Lae.
Other main points drawn on at the meeting were the scheduling of the annual general meeting, and the development of school boy rugby.
These points, however, will be further deliberated and confirmed in the next meeting tomorrow.
This meeting is intended to finalise the season draws and the POM Rugby calendar for the rest of the year.
Final dates for the AGM to will be made known then.
