POREBADA in the Kairiku-Hiri district of Central will open its first health centre later this month, according to councillor Tasman Taumaku.
The Porebada and Koderika ward councillor said the village’s population of about 10,000 went to other villages with health centres or as far as Port Moresby for services.
Taumaku said the village’s only aid post did not have the necessary facilities to continue to operate and serve the village’s growing population.
He said all thanks should go to ExxonMobil for the initiative taken to build the health centre.
“Our population is growing every year and we cannot continue to go to other wards or villages to get health treatment,” he said.
“I thank ExxonMobil on behalf of Porebada villagers for its continuous support.”
Meanwhile, he said the rainy season was affecting them badly as they could not go out to sea to fish.
“As a coastal village, we rely heavily on the sea to fish for our food and income,” he said.
“This rainy weather has affected us since New Year.
“We are held up in the house waiting for it to stop.”
