TWENTY-eight community advocates in the Porgera district, Enga, are now better equipped with basic counselling skills to deal with victims of violence in work places after attending a workshop last month.

The four-day workshop taught them how to enhance their skills in counseling and to empower their community to address social issues.

Porgera Development Authority general manager Adrad Lagos told the participants that counselling was a difficult skill.

The participants included teachers, police women, nursing officers, house wives, pastors, church elders and social welfare officers.

A participant, Evelyn Sap, said it was a successful workshop which gave them the opportunity to learn basic aspects of counselling.

“With the strong culture in Porgera it’s difficult to talk directly about social issues but with the help of strong men and women who want change in our community slowly but we will get there,” she said.
