Pornography blamed for moral decay

National

AN increase in rape, incest, marital breakdown and new trends of polygamy are clear indicators of moral decay contributed by things like pornography coming from outside, a church head says.
Evangelical Lutheran church head bishop Rev Dr Jack Urame said PNG was a Christian nation with solid social, cultural and Christian foundations “so we must not allow the global voice on human rights to undermine our values and diminish our social and cultural foundations”.
“In a communal society like Papua New Guinea, we are conscious of our actions because it will affect others in our communities,” he said.
“We must not use our rights to diminish our communal values.
“We live with our families and our communities so unfiltered materials like pornography do not only affect the one who excesses them but many others as well.
“Therefore, we must always be conscious that being exposed to bad things is nothing good but only destroying ourselves and our society.
“We claim PNG to be a Christian country and yet allow people to exercise their rights and freedom for evil purposes and behave as they wish and destroy our moral standards, cultural values and Christian principles.
“Our way of life must reflect what we claim to be and not allow the idea of human rights as an excuse to destroy our society.
“We know we all have our right of choice and this right must be respected and protected but if human rights do not contribute to the good of humanity and society, it is ethically bad.
“We cannot promote such freedom if it is destructive.
“If we claim to be a Christian nation we must do everything necessary to preserve our integrity as a Christian nation.”
