Port Moresby kicks off mini games, invites all

THE National Capital District (NCD) Governor’s Mini Games kicked off at Ela Beach on Sunday.
“The purpose of the initiative is to involve youths who are not engaged in any formal or committed activities,” NCD Commission (NCDC) sports and recreation division’s James Kepo said.
He said many competitions had been cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown and this was the governor’s initiative to keep youths fit during the pandemic.
“The Games will run for the next six to eight weeks leading up to the Carols by Candlelight in December.
“There are men’s and women’s teams competing in beach soccer, touch, volleyball and basketball.”
More than 27 teams had registered last week, with soccer and touch the only sports played on Sunday.
Ten men’s and three women’s teams competed in touch while five men’s and as many women’s sides took part in soccer.
“The deadline for registration was on Friday,” Kepo said.
“But new teams have shown interest in the Games and want to register.”
He said they had given interested teams until Thursday to pay their K50 registration fee in order to be included in the Games from Sunday.
“We want many youths to participate,” Kepo said.
He said NCDC also asked the public to come and watch the Games if they were doing nothing on weekends.
