THE Port Moresby Racquets Club yesterday launched its tennis and squash tournaments which would run for two weekends with matches to start tomorrow.
Club president Tim Kriebisch said the emphasis of the tournaments was to re-introduce the sport following pause in competitions and tournaments last year due to the Coronavirus.
“We’re happy that we’ve got approval to run tournaments this year,” he said.
“It’s also good to have our sponsors come on board again after a year off.
“We have a lot of new juniors coming in and we’re looking forward to it.
“Junior development is one of our priorities and this will not change.”
Club tennis director Linda Paru said up to 80 players, including national team members, would be competing this weekend.
“This year is good for tennis because half of our Team PNG tennis athletes are in Port Moresby and are expected to participate,” she said.
“We’re looking forward to an eventful four days as it’s been a while since we had a tournament.”
The squash tournament, in which junior and senior players are expected to compete, will run from Oct 1-3.
Club squash director Merlyn Alarcos said: “We had a tough year last year as we weren’t able to send our juniors to tournaments.
“But we expect a lot of our juniors to come through the ranks in this tournament and they’re really geared up for it.”
