Port Moresby Rugby League planning to cut regular season

THE Port Moresby Rugby Football League is planning to host only two weekends of regular-season matches before the finals when its competition resumes on Friday at the Oil Search National Football Stadium.
League administrator Meke Maino told The National yesterday that they received approval from the PNG Sports Foundation’s pandemic management committee last week to resume the season under strict Coronavirus (Covid-19) protocols.
He said the sporting hiatus following a spike in Covid-19 cases last month had affected their calendar.
“We received approval from (committee chairman) Dr Kapua Kapua last Thursday, but we felt that our officials and clubs needed more time to prepare before we could resume the season,” Maino said.
“We are planning for just two more weekends of competition to wrap up the regular season before we head into the finals.
“It’s best that clubs are ready and able to put forward teams.
“It will also allow time for the administration to go through the Covid-19 requirements from the Niupela Pasin team.
“There are not going to be any spectators, so it’s something that clubs and players will have to understand and follow for the next few weeks.” He said after the regular season, the top-eight men’s and Under-20 teams, and top-seven women’s sides would advance to the finals.
Matches were suspended since Oct 1 when the league was three weeks into the second half of the season.
