TEACHER postings for Southern Highlands next year will be done on merits and performance, education adviser Che Mepio says.
Mepio said his focus was on quality education and teachers would be properly screened in terms of qualifications and performance before taking up their post.
“You may have the degree but if you do not have the management skills and cannot perform, that can become a problem,” he said.
“If you possess the skills and can perform, then you will be given the opportunity to continue.”
He said the issue of absentee teachers would also be addressed.
“We all have a duty and a responsibility to play in order to bring this province forward.”
He acknowledged that there had been some failures and mismanagement on the part of the administration of Southern Highlands’ education system over the years but Governor William Powi aimed to improve the standard of teaching in the province.
Mepio said the provincial government had committed K20 million for school fee subsidies as the parental component, and of that money K8 million had been paid out by the provincial government to 850 schools in the province.
Mepio said providing a good education for Southern Highlands children and youths was ensuring the future.
