PAPUA New Guinea’s poultry industry is not affected by the El Nino disaster, an official says.

Papua New Guinea Poultry Industry Association president Stanley Leahy said that was because the feeds were being imported.

“From a production perspective the drought did not have a large impact on the PNG poultry industry,” Leahy told The National via email yesterday.

“This is primarily because the majority of the country’s chicken feed and grains were imported.”

He said that sales from the industry were slower than expected during the period.

“Sales are slower than expected. However, it is hard to determine how much of the slow-down is attributed to the drought as there are a lot of economic factors at play.”

Leahy said the drought does appeared to have had an impact on sales with less expendable income in the economy.

Other Agricultural sectors have noted significant impact on their business operations.
